Buying a car in Cyprus?
Top tips from TopQuotes
With UK and Japanese cars being right hand drive, both of these countries are where the
majority of cars in Cyprus originate from.
When buying a car that has been exported from the UK, you can take extra precautions
before handing over your hard earned money. You can do this by carrying out a vehicle
check against the UK registration number it last held to ensure the car hasn’t been stolen,
written off or has a mileage discrepancy.
Some ruthless dealers specifically buy cars from the UK that have sustained sufficient
damage for their insurance companies to declare them as a ‘total loss’ or ‘beyond
economic repair’.
While many ‘lightly’ damaged cars may have had only superficial cosmetic damage, unless
you know what you are looking for, you are effectively paying over the odds for a
substandard vehicle.
Similarly, as all modern vehicles have electronic mileometers, there is a whole industry for
cars to have their mileage adjusted backwards before their first British MOT inspection is
due (3 years old) and then sent for export.
Always be wary of vehicles which show wear to the steering wheel, pedals and interior trim
but purport to have relatively low mileage. Often these cars have falsified service history
documents to support the amended distance travelled.
